Middlemarch George Eliot
by George Eliot

View in Library Catalog

Middlemarch by George Eliot is a long and wordy book. In the beginning, we learn of two sisters of marriageable age who live with their bachelor uncle because their parents have passed. The older daughter, Dorothea, is expected to marry a baron, Sir James Chettam, who is young, rich, handsome. Instead she choses Mr. Casaubon, who is older and not very good looking but whose ideas of science and progress are of great interest to her. She greatly admires him but they are not in love. Rosamund Vincy is very pretty and the most eligible lady. She and the young dr seem to have love at first sight. Her brother, Fred, who is lazy and in debt from gambling, has apparently tried to borrow against his rich uncle’s estate when the uncle passes and leaves his land to Fred. Fred needs a letter from the banker to give the the uncle to prove this rumor is not true. He asks his father, who is a brother-in-law to the banker, to get it for him. This is all after 127 very long and drawn out wordy pages. I almost always finish a book when I start one, but this time, I’m not going to. It is too slow going and there is not enough time. ??

Did You Ever Have a Family
by Bill Clegg

View in Library Catalog

Did You Ever Have A Family starts out with an early morning house fire. The owner of the house, June, is standing watching from the yard. Four members of her family are killed in this horrible fire. We learn that her daughter, Lolly, and Lolly’s fiancee, Will, are killed in the blaze and were to have been married that day. June’s boyfriend, Luke, also killed in the fire, has been in prison and is generally blamed by the townspeople for starting the fine. June’s ex-husband, Adam, is killed in the blaze, and he was only staying at the house because of Lolly’s insistence. After the funerals, June leaves town without a word to anyone. She drives from Connecticut to the west coast and confines herself to a small room in a motel. She stays in this room and does not contact anyone. There is no fire investigation and the charred remains of the house are bull dozed over. We learn from others about the fire, the various family member’s backgrounds including June and Adams marriage and divorce, the owners of the motel where June is hiding out, Will’s growing up years and his time with Lolly. Many of these persons have their own chapters. Lydia is Luke’s mother and she tells of her early marriage, divorce and raising Luke alone. She also tells of his drug arrest and how she later found out he was innocent. Silas is a young teenager who works for Luke doing yard work and was one of the crew that prepared the grounds for the wedding. He left his knapsack containing his drug paraphernalia at the house and after dark, he goes back to retrieve it. He hears a constant ticking sound coming from the kitchen, goes inside and realizes it is the old stove that is causing the sound. He turns several of the knobs and silences the stove. This does not fix it, and gas is leaking. Thus the explosion and the fire. Luke is not to blame in any way. Silas feels a large burden of guilt and eventually tells Lydia what happened. Lydia in turn finds June and tells her. The book closes with the two women sitting together on June’s bed in the motel.

Thought this was a novel. Not a bad book about true exploration, that is until the inevitable "evil white man" and "global warming/climate change/tree hugging" tongue lashing came into play. Still a good story just skip the last chapter, it adds nothing.
