Tugboat Bill and the River Rescue
by Calista Brill

View in Library Catalog

So mom read me "Tugboat Bill and the River Rescue." She really liked the pictures, and I like boats, so she thought it was going to be a win-win for sure. She was right. It's about a Tugboat (named Bill, obviously) and his friend, a barge named Mabel. The big proud ships make fun of poor Mabel, and she and Bill are super classy and ignore their smack talk. When a kitten falls into the Hudson River, Mabel is quick to leap into action (and it is noted that Bill also helps.) Mabel is then honored as a hero and the big ships are jealous that they didn't help when they had the chance! It's a great story and I actually paid attention to the fun language (lots of different adjectives) and wonderful illustrations. I appreciated the use of lots of primary colors, those are my favorite. I do wonder why the book isn't called "A Barge Named Mabel" since she is the main character, but I guess Tugboat Bill is a catchier title. A great book all around!

Little Prince the story of a shetland pony
by Annie Wedekind

View in Library Catalog

Little Prince is the story of a shetland pony named Dauphin, Prince in French, that lives the perfect life being pampered by his owner, Isabella Ingram. But on the first ride in weeks, Isabella seems to have gotten larger, to large for Phin to even canter with. On the day of the pony show, Phin is certain that the Ingrams would take him to the country club to win another silver bowl, but disaster befalls Phin's world as he is brought to the Funny Farm. A strange assortment of animals awaits as he makes a beeline for safety. He meets a three legged dog named freddy, a emu named Matilda, a very obnoxious cameo named Sally, and a wise old buffalo named Sumalee. He must escape, but not only from the camel trying to eat his tail, but away from the farm forever. But the wise words from Sumalee stop him. He has a reputation for helping the animals, that started by getting Sven, a blind reindeer's antlers out the fence. But then the flood comes... The worst of animal enemies must work together to escape the raging waters. In the end, the Funny Farm is rebuilt, and fresh for all the inhabitants. And now Phin finally knows where he belongs...

Middlemarch George Eliot
by George Eliot

View in Library Catalog

Middlemarch by George Eliot is a long and wordy book. In the beginning, we learn of two sisters of marriageable age who live with their bachelor uncle because their parents have passed. The older daughter, Dorothea, is expected to marry a baron, Sir James Chettam, who is young, rich, handsome. Instead she choses Mr. Casaubon, who is older and not very good looking but whose ideas of science and progress are of great interest to her. She greatly admires him but they are not in love. Rosamund Vincy is very pretty and the most eligible lady. She and the young dr seem to have love at first sight. Her brother, Fred, who is lazy and in debt from gambling, has apparently tried to borrow against his rich uncle’s estate when the uncle passes and leaves his land to Fred. Fred needs a letter from the banker to give the the uncle to prove this rumor is not true. He asks his father, who is a brother-in-law to the banker, to get it for him. This is all after 127 very long and drawn out wordy pages. I almost always finish a book when I start one, but this time, I’m not going to. It is too slow going and there is not enough time. ??

Unnaturals Escape from Lion's Head
by Devon Hughes

View in Library Catalog

This book was a good addition to the first one. The main character is a fox, who is later named Kozmo. She runs into Castor's brother Runt, and tries to find the Greenlands, a legendary paradise. Kozmo runs into Castor, who thinks she is hurting his brother. And meanwhile, the mayor is scheming with tests to save her girl, who was accidentally changed into a lizard, who has a serious sensitivity to sun, and the mayor is asking the labs to find a medication to save her. Castor, his fellow Unnaturals, and two children find out the mayor's desires and meet the lizard, the mayor's daughter. Francine, the daughter is quite happy as a lizard, because her sensitivity to the sun has been erased. The mayor's plot is discovered and the Unnaturals and their new friend Kozmo live forevermore in the lush, spacious Greenlands.
