The Woman On The Stairs
by Bernard Schlink

View in Library Catalog

“The Woman on the Stairs” is actually the name of a painting. The book centers around four people. The artist who did the painting, the owner of the painting, the owner’s wife who is the subject of the painting (a life size nude of her descending the stairs) and a lawyer. The owner and his wife are separated and she is currently with the artist. The artist wants the portrait back and seeks help from a lawyer who draws up a contract that says the artist can have the painting back in exchange for the owner’s wife. The meeting to make the exchange takes place but the wife and lawyer team together and steal the painting. The wife then double crosses the lawyer by stealing the painting and disappearing. Forty years later he sees the painting and searches for her. She is living in a remote area and is dying of cancer. He cares for her until she’s gone. The end. Don’t recommend.
